Enema bulb vs irrigator: what's the difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably – yet the way they are used and the amount of liquid differ considerably.
Irrigator (Edelstahl-Set) und Ballklistier im Vergleich

We are often asked what the difference is between an enema bulb and an irrigator. The terms are frequently used interchangeably, but the devices differ in how they are used and in the amount of liquid.

The enema bulb

The enema bulb – also called a bulb syringe or bulb enema – is a handy bulb with a tip. It is filled before use, and the pressure is created by squeezing it with your hand. Typical capacities are around 200 ml; larger models hold up to 500 ml. It is suitable for smaller amounts of liquid and is easy to dose.

Our Enema Bulb 225 ml is this type of device.

The irrigator

An irrigator is a device in which the liquid flows by gravity: the container or bag hangs or stands higher up, and a hose leads to the tip. This allows larger amounts to be used (e.g. up to 2 litres). Irrigators come as containers or bags – in our range as the Stainless Steel Enema Kit and the Silicone Bag Enema Kit. They are often used during fasting, for example.
