The bowel is a topic people talk about more openly today. Yet many people are unsure what an enema actually involves. Time for a factual overview.

What is an enema?

During an enema, water or another liquid is introduced into the rectum through a small tip. There are different devices for this: the enema bulb for small amounts, and irrigators in the form of a container or bag for larger amounts. The procedure may feel unfamiliar, but it should not hurt.

What is an enema used for?

Many people use an enema to feel clean or alongside fasting.

Do I need one?

Whether you would like to use an enema is a personal decision. Please discuss its use with your doctor beforehand – especially if you have symptoms or pre-existing conditions, or if you would like to use enemas regularly.

We explain which device suits you in our article Enema bulb vs irrigator.
